The Dying Fish (A Sojourn to the Source) tells my story of wandering through the Appalachians over the course of five years looking for native brook trout and the waters they thrive in. I was naive at the outset, trying to learn to stay alive in the mountains and simply move the pack northward. The reader learns along with me the ways of life alone in the mountains and the ways of the reticent little trout who call these mountains home. The book rises to greater heights in the second half as the simple woodland narrative is sometimes eclipsed by more thoughtful musings on the sylvan environment and our place in it.
